Triangles: Coiling for the Move

Compression precedes expansion

Triangles form as a battle between buyers and sellers narrows the trading range. Each tighter swing reflects indecision — until one side gives way and price breaks out, often violently.

An ascending triangle (flat top, rising lows) leans bullish; a descending triangle (flat bottom, falling highs) leans bearish. A symmetrical triangle is neutral and trades in the direction of the break.

Don't anticipate the breakout. Wait for the close beyond the trendline — premature entries inside the triangle are how accounts get chopped up.
  • Entry: close beyond the triangle boundary
  • Stop: back inside the triangle
  • Target: widest part of the triangle projected from breakout
